  • WHY IS HANDCRAFTED SOAP BETTER THAN COMMERCIAL SOAP?
Handcrafted soap uses ingredients that come primarily from nature; are sustainable; and cause no harm to humans, animals, or the earth. Ingredients are natural, organic, vegan, and non-GMO. They are free from sulfates, phthalates, parabens, dyes, and lakes. They are responsibly sourced from suppliers who do not do any animal testing. Handcrafted soap is made up of vegetable oil (sometimes animal fats too) and butters that are rich in antioxidants, vitamins and nutrients needed for a healthy skin. Handcrafted soap is biodegradable and has zero waste. When you buy handcrafted soaps, you are also supporting small business. You can rest assured that the soap is made locally, or in the Unites States of America. Commercial soap is made mostly from synthetic detergents. Manufacturers remove glycerin, a naturally-occurring byproduct of the saponification process. Glycerin is a humectant that draws moisture from the air to your skin, leaving your skin soft and moisturized. Commercial soap contains harmful additives, preservatives, chemical-based colorants, dyes, fragrances, and lathering agents. It is manufactured typically in China. The commercial soap industry contributes to the world’s plastic waste.
  • WHAT IS SAPONIFICATION?
Saponification is the chemical reaction in which the building blocks of fats and oils react with lye to form soap. The products of saponification are glycerin and soap.
  • WHY DOES SOAP NEED TO CURE?
Handcrafted soap goes through a curing phase in order for the water to slowly evaporate over time which causes the soap to harden. A harder soap will last longer, produce more lather, and just be an overall better soap. Curing time usually takes 3-6 weeks.
  • DO YOU HAVE TO USE LYE TO MAKE SOAP?
Yes. It is impossible to make real soap without using lye. However, during the process of making soap, no lye remains in the finished product. 100% of the lye added to our recipes bonds with the oils and through the saponification process, becomes soap and glycerin. No lye remains in the final bars of soap.
  • WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HAND MILLED AND COLD PROCESS SOAP?
Hand milled soap or Melt and Pour is a ready-made soap base composed of fatty acids, glycerin, and other natural ingredients. The base is produced through the saponification process which involves mixing fats and lye. This is a nice alternative to soap-making if one does not want to work with lye. It has previously cured so one can use the soap immediately. Cold Process Soap is soap made from raw materials, natural oils and butters and lye that is allowed to go through the chemical process of saponification. Cold Process soap needs to cure for 4-6 weeks.
